Techniques for putting something in and getting it back: give it a place, a story or a hook, then meet it again before it fades.

Give every digit a picture and it stops slipping.
Numbers are hard to hold because they carry no picture. The Major System gives every digit a consonant sound, lets you build words from those sounds, and turns the words into images. An image stays put in a way a digit never does.
Take the last four digits of a number you keep forgetting and make two images from them.
- Which number do I keep having to look up?
- What image did each pair of digits give me?
- Which of the ten sounds still does not come automatically?

Store it in a place you already know by heart.
You already remember the layout of places you know without any effort at all. A memory palace borrows that free spatial memory and hangs new things on it, so recall becomes a walk rather than a search.
Fix five stops in your home and put one thing you need to remember at each.
- Which route do I know so well I could walk it in the dark?
- Which stop keeps going blank, and is it too similar to its neighbour?
- Was the image big and strange enough, or was it polite?

Most forgotten names were never heard in the first place.
Forgetting a name is rarely a memory problem. It is an attention problem: the name arrived while you were busy deciding what to say next, so it was never encoded at all.
Next introduction, repeat the name out loud before you say anything else.
- Did I actually hear the name, or was I already composing my reply?
- Which feature would still be there in a year?
- What picture ties this name to that feature?

Fewer, bigger pieces beat more, smaller ones.
Working memory holds a small number of items, but it does not care how big each item is. Grouping turns nine things into three things, and three things fit where nine never did.
Take the next long number you need and split it into groups of three or four.
- What natural groups are already in this?
- Is there a date, a pattern or a word buried in here?
- Am I saying it in a rhythm, or as one flat run?

Absurd stories hold what neat lists drop.
A list has no reason to stay in order. A story does, because each event pulls the next one in behind it. Chaining items into one ridiculous scene borrows that pull.
Link the next three things you need to remember with two physical actions.
- What is the ACTION between these two items?
- Is my scene too reasonable to be memorable?
- Which link keeps breaking when I run it back?

Ten hooks you carry everywhere, already numbered.
A palace needs a place. A peg list needs nothing, because the hooks live in your head and travel with you. Ten fixed images, learned once, hold ten things anywhere, and they come back numbered.
Learn pegs one to five today and hang your next five to-dos on them.
- Are my ten pegs automatic yet, or am I still deriving them?
- Did the item and the peg actually interact, or just sit together?
- Which peg number does this item belong to?

Meet it again exactly as it starts to fade.
Forgetting is not the enemy of learning, it is the trigger for it. Meeting something again just as it starts to fade forces a harder retrieval, and a harder retrieval is what makes it durable.
Pick one thing you learned today and put a reminder for tomorrow to recall it cold.
- When did I last meet this?
- Did it come back on its own, or did I have to look?
- Should the next gap be longer or shorter than the last one?

Recognizing is not remembering.
Rereading builds a feeling of knowing that is not knowing. Trying to produce the answer from nothing is uncomfortable, measures what is actually there, and is what strengthens it.
Cover what you are studying and write down everything you can before you look.
- Am I recognizing this, or could I produce it from a blank page?
- What did I miss when the source was closed?
- Which part am I avoiding testing because it is uncomfortable?
